Knowing how to compare USB hubs means looking beyond the number of ports on the product page. The right choice depends on what you connect, how much power those devices need, and what your computer can support.
Start With the Devices You Use
Before comparing hub specs, make a quick list of what needs to stay connected. A wireless mouse receiver and keyboard use very little bandwidth. An external SSD, webcam, Ethernet adapter, card reader, or monitor can make much bigger demands.
For a basic laptop desk setup, a compact hub with USB-A ports, one USB-C data port, and HDMI may be enough. If you regularly transfer photos, edit files from an external drive, or connect to a wired network, prioritize higher-speed data ports and the specific connections you use most.
A hub should remove the need for adapters, not simply move the adapter pile to another part of your desk. Buying extra ports you will never use can add cost and bulk. Buying too few often means replacing the hub sooner than expected.
How to Compare USB Hubs by Port Type
Port count matters, but port type matters more. USB-C is the small oval-shaped connector used on many newer laptops, tablets, phones, and accessories. USB-A is the familiar rectangular port found on flash drives, older cables, keyboards, and many desktop accessories.
Check the hub's port layout against the cables you already own. A hub with four USB-C ports may look current, but it is not convenient if your mouse receiver, printer cable, and flash drives are all USB-A.

For everyday accessories, USB 2.0 speed is usually fine. Keyboards, mice, printers, and many basic receivers do not need more. USB 2.0 tops out at 480 Mbps, which can feel slow for moving large files.
For external SSDs, fast flash drives, and high-resolution webcams, look for USB ports rated at 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps. A 10 Gbps hub does not automatically make every drive faster. The drive, cable, computer port, and hub all need to support that speed. The slowest part of the connection sets the real-world limit.
Do not assume every port on a hub runs at the same speed. A model may have one 10 Gbps USB-C port and several USB-A ports limited to 5 Gbps or USB 2.0. That can still be a good design if it matches how you work. Just make sure the fast port is available for the device that needs it.
Understand Shared Bandwidth
A hub connects several devices through one port on your laptop or desktop. Those connected devices can share available bandwidth. This is rarely an issue for a keyboard, mouse, and charging cable, but it can matter when multiple high-speed devices are active at once.
For example, copying video files between two external SSDs while using a high-resolution webcam may reduce transfer performance. Adding a display connection can also affect what the hub can handle, depending on the computer and hub design.
If you need one fast external drive, a standard 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps hub is often practical. If you routinely work with multiple fast drives, large video files, and external displays, consider a higher-capability USB-C or Thunderbolt solution. It costs more, but it can offer more total bandwidth. The key is choosing for your actual workload rather than paying for a specification you will not use.
Compare Power Delivery Carefully
Many USB-C hubs can pass power from a USB-C charger to your laptop. This is useful because one cable can connect your accessories and charge your computer at the same time. However, the power number on the hub is not always the power your laptop receives.
A hub may advertise 100W Power Delivery input while reserving a portion for its own operation. In that case, your laptop may receive less than 100W. Check the listed pass-through or host charging output, then compare it with your laptop's recommended charger wattage.
A low-power laptop may work well with a 45W or 65W charger. Larger laptops can need 90W, 100W, or more under heavy use. If the hub and charger cannot provide enough power, the laptop may charge slowly, show a low-power warning, or draw down the battery during demanding tasks.
Your charger is part of the setup. A hub with 100W pass-through cannot deliver 100W if it is connected to a lower-wattage charger. If you plan to power external drives, use Ethernet, and run a monitor, choose a charger with enough headroom for both the hub and laptop.
Verify External Display Support
HDMI is one of the most requested hub features, but display support is where compatibility details matter most. Check the maximum resolution and refresh rate listed for the HDMI or DisplayPort output. A hub that supports 4K at 30Hz is fine for documents and email, but cursor movement and scrolling will feel less fluid than at 60Hz.
For most work and entertainment setups, 4K at 60Hz is a sensible target when your laptop supports it. Gamers and creative users may need higher refresh rates, specific resolutions, or DisplayPort support. Those requirements should be checked against the computer, monitor, cable, and hub together.
Multiple-monitor support is even more dependent on the host computer. Some laptops support two separate external displays through one hub, while others may mirror the same image or support only one external monitor. Operating system support also varies. Read the hub's compatibility notes before expecting a dual-display desk setup.
Consider Size, Cable Design, and Build
A hub lives either in your bag or on your desk, so physical design affects daily use. Compact models are easy to carry but can place ports close together, making thick cables awkward. Desk hubs are larger, often offer more ports, and can be easier to reach.
Look at the attached host cable if the hub has one. A very short cable can keep a travel setup tidy but may not reach comfortably around a laptop stand or desktop monitor. A removable cable is more flexible and easier to replace, though not every hub uses one.
Metal housings can help with heat management and often feel more durable. Plastic hubs can be lighter and less expensive. Neither is automatically better. What matters is whether the hub stays stable, the ports fit securely, and the design works with your workspace.
Match the Hub to Your Computer
The hub cannot add capabilities your computer's USB port does not support. A USB-C port may support charging and data but not video output. Some computers have Thunderbolt ports with higher bandwidth, while others use standard USB-C. Check your computer's port specifications before choosing a feature-heavy hub.
This is especially relevant for display output and charging. If your laptop does not support video over USB-C, an HDMI port on a basic hub may not work as expected. If your computer uses a proprietary charger or has limited USB-C charging support, Power Delivery pass-through may not be useful.
