Capacity, charging speed, cable compatibility, size, and safety all affect whether a power bank fits your routine. Start with how you actually use your devices, then buy enough battery without carrying more weight than necessary.
Start With the Devices You Need to Charge
A portable charger for one smartphone has very different requirements than one meant for a phone, tablet, earbuds, smartwatch, and handheld gaming device. Check the charging port on each device first. Most current phones, tablets, and laptops use USB-C, while older accessories may still use USB-A, Lightning, or Micro-USB.

Some energy is lost when power is converted and transferred. Battery age, temperature, cable quality, and your phone's battery size also affect the result.
For most people, a 5,000 mAh power bank is a compact emergency option. It is easy to carry in a pocket or small bag and can provide a meaningful partial charge or around one full charge for some phones. It works well for commuting, concerts, and short days away from an outlet.
A 10,000 mAh model is the practical sweet spot for everyday use. It usually offers about one to two phone recharges in a portable size. This capacity suits workdays, weekend outings, and travelers who want backup power without adding much bulk.
A 20,000 mAh power bank is better for longer trips, multiple devices, or people who may not have access to a wall outlet for a day or more. The trade-off is clear: more capacity means more weight, more space, and a longer recharge time. It makes sense in a backpack or carry-on, but it can feel excessive for a quick trip to the store.
Higher-capacity models can be useful for tablets and some laptops, but capacity alone is not enough for those devices. You also need enough output wattage.
Look at Watts, Not Just Fast-Charge Labels

A 65W power bank is not necessary if you only charge a phone. It may cost more and be larger than you need. On the other hand, a 20W model will not be a realistic laptop charger just because it has a USB-C port. Match the power bank's output to the device's needs.
Also check whether the listed wattage applies when one device is connected or when all ports are in use. A charger may offer 30W from one USB-C port but split that output when a second device is added. This is normal, but it matters when you expect to charge several items quickly.
Power Delivery and Wireless Charging
USB-C Power Delivery is a common standard for fast charging phones, tablets, and laptops. It is a smart feature to prioritize because it supports a wide range of current devices and makes a power bank more useful over time.

For air travel, portable chargers must generally go in your carry-on bag, not checked luggage. Airlines and airport rules can change, so confirm the current requirements before flying.
